Motor Vehicle Accidents

Introduction.  Motor vehicle accidents, including accidents involving cars, motorcycles, trucks and buses, are the most common cause of serious injury in the United States, resulting in hundreds of thousands of injuries and deaths.  If you have been injured or have lost a loved one due to a vehicle accident that someone else caused, you may be entitled to recover damages.  Potentially recoverable damages include medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages.

Causes.  Motor vehicle accidents can be caused by the negligence or reckless conduct of drivers, defective auto parts such as defective tires, improper highway or roadway design or maintenance, or a myriad of other issues.  Some of the potential causes for a motor vehicle accident include:

  • Alcohol-related accidents caused by drunk drivers
  • Driver fatigue, which is a common factor in truck and commercial vehicle accidents
  • Defective auto parts or failure to properly maintain a vehicle

Results.  At Robert B. Sykes & Associates, P.C. we have successfully litigated several cases resulting in six and seven figure settlements on behalf of clients located throughout Utah.  Insurance companies vigorously defend motor vehicle accident cases.  We are prepared to fight hard for justice for those who have been injured, and are willing to try cases in court if fair settlements are not offered.

What to Do?  If you have been in an accident, try to obtain as much information as you can about the accident and the parties involved, including the following:

  • Names, addresses, phone numbers and insurance information for all of the drivers and vehicle owners involved in the accident
  • Names, addresses, and phone numbers of any potential witnesses
  • Information about the accident scene, such as the position of the cars and photographs of the scene and vehicles involved

Seek immediate medical attention if you or a passenger are injured. Notify the police immediately if you suspect a driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  Notify your insurance company.  Do not give a statement to your insurance company until after you have consulted with an attorney.

If you have suffered an injury in a motor vehicle accident, contact the personal injury lawyers at Robert B. Sykes & Associates, P.C. at (801) 533-0222 or by e-mail for a free initial consultation regarding your case.
